Summary:
The Surgery Scheduler is responsible for coordinating surgical procedures, preparing and coordinating pre-operative and post-operative patient care, and ensuring efficient communication between the hospitals, surgery centers and in-office procedures with physicians and our affiliates.
Essential Functions:
- Responsible for scheduling surgeries, procedures and deliveries for our providers with the correct facility.
- Responsible for pre-surgery coordination with patients including tests and insurance.
- Conducts the insurance verifications and pre-authorizations, verifying coverage and communicating details with patient and the billing department.
- Provides explanation and counseling regarding their upcoming surgery or procedure and provides any additional patient information as needed.
Primary Duties:
- Obtains surgical authorizations from insurance carriers.
- Verify insurance benefits to determine patient out-of-pocket costs and advise patients of payment options.
- Prepares necessary medical records and documents for patient charts.
- Respond to (patients/vendors/employees)
- Coordinates and schedules preoperative testing, history and physical, and surgical procedures with facilities, patient and provider.
- Identify, request, and coordinate specialized equipment and/or personnel requested by physicians for each surgical case.
- Maintains appropriate surgical logs for all physicians in the practice.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
- Strong knowledge of medical terminology, specifically Ob/Gyn terminology.
- Knowledge of insurance policies, pre-authorization processes, and HIPPA regulations.
- Excellent organizational skills with the ability to multitask and manage time effectively.
- Proficient in EHR and scheduling software.
- Ability to work collaboratively with medical professionals and provide empathetic patient support.
- Ability to handle unexpected situations calmly and problem-solving patient concerns or conflicts.
Work Environment
- May require occasional travel or overtime.
- Work is performed in a professional healthcare setting.
- Possible exposure to communicable diseases, blood-borne pathogens, and toxic substances in the work environment.
Physical Demands
- Ability to lift and move medical equipment and supplies up to (X) pounds
- Extended periods of standing and/or walking.
- Manual ability for handling instruments and equipment.
Education
- Education: High school diploma or GED required; associate’s degree in healthcare or a related field.
- Certifications: (Required certifications and/or licenses.)
- Preferred education: Associate degree in healthcare or a related field.
Experience
- Experience: 2 years of experience in a healthcare coordination, surgical scheduling or similar position.
- Preferred experience if needed.
