Position Summary:         Sonographers are essential for performing, documenting and submitting relevant information to assist the radiologist and physicians with the diagnosis and treatment of patients.   Sonographers are key contributors to providing support for the providers by following quality of care guidelines.

Essential Functions:
 
  • Prepare exam room and ultrasound equipment to conduct sonography examinations
  • Assume responsibility for the safety of the patient during sonographic examinations
  • Review patient medical history, supporting clinical information, and orders prior to conducting exams
  • Evaluate any contraindications, insufficient patient preparation, and the patient’s inability or willingness to tolerate the examination and associated procedures
  • Communicate with patients in a manner appropriate to the patient’s ability to understand
  • Use proper patient positioning tools, devices, equipment adjustment, and ergonomically correct scanning techniques to ensure patient comfort and safety, and to prevent compromised data acquisition and musculoskeletal injury to sonographer
  • Conduct patient clinical assessment and perform the diagnostic medical sonography examination order by the provider in accordance with professional and facility protocol
  • Apply independent professional, ethical judgement, and critical thinking to safely perform diagnostic sonography procedures
  • Apply independent judgement during the sonography examination to ensure that appropriate anatomical, pathological, and clinical conditions are accurately captured in the examination images
  • Refer  specific diagnostic, treatment, or prognosis questions to a licensed practitioner when necessary
  • Acquire additional ultrasound imaging to facilitate optimum diagnostic results for the interpreting physician
  • Identify and document any limitations to the sonography examination
  • Review examination images, synthesize examination results, and prepare the preliminary findings for the interpreting physician
  • Document any incidental findings that might impact patient care for interpreting physician
  • Maintain patient privacy and confidentiality in accordance with HIPAA rules and regulations
  • Adhere to accepted professional and ethical standards
  • Provide patient services consistent with the Scope of Practice and Clinical Standards for the Diagnostic Sonographer
  • Perform quality control procedures to ensure the ultrasound equipment operates at optimal levels
  • Exercise responsibility to ensure the ultrasound equipment is functioning accurately
  • Exercise responsibility for the maintenance an accuracy of facility reports, database records and logs, and communication system
  • Follow guidelines as stated in Policies and Procedures and Employee Handbooks
  • Assist in maintaining communications and respect with fellow co-workers and outside practices and vendors
  • Assists with other duties not specifically mentioned in job description

  • Must be able to stand for a significant amount of time

Equipment Used:
 
  • Ultrasound equipment, transducers, computer, phone, fax machine, copier, scanner, postage meter and all other equipment used in an office

Minimum Qualifications:
 
  • Graduation/completion of sonography education and training by an accredited facility
  • Current (or currently in process of obtaining) certification by ARDMS and/or ARRA
  • Current (or currently in process of obtaining) NT certification
  • Minimum of 2 years’ experience in performing women’s health/obstetric ultrasound examinations
  • Above average interpersonal skills
  • Above average organizational skills
  • Advanced knowledge of medical terminology.
  • General math skills
  • General computer skills
  • Must be self-motivated
  • Above average problem solving capabilities
  • Above average communication skills – verbal and written
  • Must have reliable transportation
  • Must be able to work extended hours as necessary
